Additional Information : The engraving on this glass is the motto of the Order of the Garter and means “May he be shamed who thinks badly of it”. A rare engraving to find on any 18th century glass.
Founded to 1348 by Edward III this order of Chivalry is now bestowed upon those who have given service to the nation. Originally it was bestowed upon The Black Prince and others who had given personal service to the King. This is Anglo-Norman and relates to Edward’s claim to the French throne.
