Description
A superbly engraved Georgian Facet Cut Wine Glass c1770.
It has a round funnel with beautifully engraved fruiting vines engravings with polished detailing. There is also an engraved centaury Centaurium erythraea. a medicinal herb known from Roman times and also widely used by the Georgians to act as a cleanser of the liver. restorative. to cleanse the blood. combat gout and aid to digestion. We would not recommend mixing this with your next glass of Syrah as it is apparently quite bitter. In this case perhaps the plant was used in a symbolic way. engraved upon the glass rather than mixed with wine. However centaury tonics were indeed made with wine. It has a diamond facet cut stem above a high conical foot with snapped pontil.
English lead. no chips cracks or restoration. it measures 6 1/8 inches tall with a 2 3/16 inch bowl and 2 7/8 inch foot.
It has a very small open air bubble at the base of the bowl which does not detract from the glass in any way.
A particularly fine example.
