Description
A fantastic and rare example of a facet cut goblet c1775. The cup bowl engraved with the words ‘Tally Ho’ above an engraved fox.
It has scale facet cutting to the base of the bowl continuing down to a thick diamond facet cut stem above a conical foot with snapped pontil.
English lead. no chips cracks or restoration. it measures 6 ½ inches tall with a 2 7/8 inch bowl and 3 5/16 inch foot.
The term ‘Tally Ho’was first used in the 18th century and is probably derived from the French taïaut. a cry used to excite hounds when hunting deer but is now associated very much with foxhunting. It’s a relatively rare engraving most frequently found on smaller late 18th century gin or port glasses with simple engravings. This example being a being a good sized goblet with a very detailed fox is exceptional.
