Description

A superb and rare Georgian Jacobite Sympathy Engraved Wine Glass c1760.

It has an Ogee bowl with a Jacobite rose and Scottish thistle joined at the stem with the word FIAT. Sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of a ten ply spiral band outside a pair of spiral threads above a thick firing foot. The stuart rose and the thistle allude to the patriotic duty of the Scotsman to “the cause”. Fiat. as the Beatles sang.”‘let it be“.

The pictures show the glass standing between a standard sized wine glass and a standard sized firing glass. Technically speaking this is a “short wine with a firing foot”.  We’ve had but few examples of this form over the years. The engravings are also very rare but documented. The underside of the foot has been polished flat at manufacture. which again is unusual and something we see only occasionally on firing glasses. The wear is also heavy as would be expected and is very much consistent with age. and active use. The rim of the bowl has some tooth marks. There is a “pin prick” on the wear line as shown and again is to be expected. This glass has been “a favourite” and has well used over a long period of time.

The engravings are certainly not standard which is often the case with opaque twist examples as they were made two decades and moreafter the “45 uprising” and you tend to find greater variety of Jacobite engravings on this form.

Its measures 4 ¾ inches tall with a 1 15/16 inch bowl and 2 ½ inch foot.

English lead. no chips cracks or restoration.
