Eric Knowles Comments

The engraving of the eight petalled rose is of a superior quality to most produced by the “Jacobiite engravers. Eight outer petals with four layers of florets should be more than enough to denude almost all aspirations as to the veracity of this glass.

Following the almost criminal demise of the great glass houses of Stourbridge there were a lot of very talented people with time on their hands. This is almost certainly a Stuart Crystal wine glass. This is a homage to the genre. it was never intended to deceive.

Be aware that more often than not those Jacobite glasses that are poorly engraved are the most highly dubious and almost certainly later engraved or fakes. Genuine Jacobite glasses were commissioned. no engraver would have kept them in stock. No well-to-do supporter of the cause would accept ersatz engraving. the glass was very costly as was the time of the engraver.

The argument that naively engraved Jacobite glasses are “earlier” is undobtedly wrong or purposefully mendacious. it has no basis in the historical record. Diamond point engraved Jacobite glasses lack the same refinements. Amen. These are not wheel cut.
