Additional Information:
This glass is one of the most fascinating Jacobite glass we have ever had in stock. An identical glass is contained within the Royal Collection Trust which is described as being one of a pair that was given as a gift to Queen Victoria in 1890. Jacobite glasses are enough to excite any Georgian glass lover’s interest any day of the week. for this to have potentially been in the possession of Queen Victoria takes it to another level entirely.
The motto “Cujus est Cuique Suum Reddite” appears to be very rare amongst Jacobite items. the only other example we can find is a glass of the same form that was also in the Royal Family’s possession from at least 1896. This glass is referenced in both Hartshorne’s iconic “Old English Glasses” in 1897 and in Rees Price’s 1906 “Notes on Jacobite Glasses”. Both mention it as being rare with Price suggesting it was the only example he could find. Its rarity is such that Seddon in his seminal book on the subject only mentions it as appearing on some Jacobite medals. The meaning of the motto itself is simple enough. return to the Stuart’s their rightful place.
The significance of this glass is staggering. as far as we are aware it is the only glass with this motto in private ownership. and only one of two identical glasses in existence. The other belongs to either the Royal family or the Royal Collection Trust. For any Jacobite collector. or any collector of glass for that matter. this glass would be a crowning addition to the collection.
With a history entwined with the Royal family from George II to Victoria it is also a piece of Royal memorabilia.
