Description
A pair of Jacobite sympathy engraved wine glasses. They have engraved cup bowls with petal cuts to the lower bowl with slice cuts that adjoin the hexagonal facet cut stem. Conical feet with snapped pontils. They are engraved with lily of valley (symbol of the return of happiness). Stuart rose with polished detailing and a Jay bird. a symbol of the usurpation of Stuarts. In Aesop’s fables the jay dresses himself in peacock’s feathers. but the peacocks on finding the imposter pluck away his feathers and the Jay returns to from whence he came. The other Jays remind him that “it is not only fine feathers that make a fine bird”.
They stand 4 7/8th inches with 1 7/8th inch bowls and 2 3/4 inch feet. One glass has a chip combined with a flake to the wear rim. it measures 1/4 inch long and is 3/16th deep. If you would like this glass to be restored then we may arrange this for you. please contact us to discuss. It does not affect the display qualities in any way. The photographs show this minor defect well.
We do not wish to split the pair as they have been together for over 200 years and pairs of Jacobite sympathy glasses are a very rare bird indeed. Consider this as one jacobite glass for £300 and one for free if you prefer.
