Albert Hartshorne. former curator of the V and A first made the Scottish attribution attribution based on the propensity of finds in Lothian and the borders in addition to contemporary advertising and paperwork from the Caledonoian Company of the Holyrood Flint Glass Words in Edinburgh founded in 1812.
The pontil is snapped which would suggest an early 19th century date. It would be reasonable to assume that once steam power arrived in glass manufactories that polishing would become much less time consuming and costly to undertake
