This is one of the finest examples that we have seen.
With the glass being decorated at the Giles atelier there is a strong possibility that it was not only London decorated but also London made. The Falcon Glasshouse in Southwark supplied the atelier with glass to be decorated. as did William Parker. the London glass merchant who was himself supplied by the Falcon and others.
Too many gilded glasses are incorrectly attributed to Giles. one of many decorating shops in London dealing with both glass and porcelain. The gilding produced by the Giles atelier has for the most part delicate design with very fine detail. If the fine detail is lacking then either it is not Giles or it has been restored. Some Giles glasses have over time been touched up. the gilding loses it’s delicacy and large vine leaves start to look ‘daubed’ and amateurish.
Giles gilded decoration attribution may also be demonstrable from the extensive legacy of decorated porcelains.
