This is engraved with the “Princes flower”. beach morning glory. This was sown on the shoreline by Charles Edward Stuart when he landed at Eriksay on 23rd July 1745 disguised as a priest.

We have included an image of the Prestonpans Tapestry depicting the prince landing at Eriksay. At his feet Calystegia Soldanella. the Princes Flower. This is a modern tapestry which tells the tale of the 45 from Italy and France up to the point of the victory at Prestonpans.

The tapestry goes no further and fails to show the bickering. squabbles and infighting amongst the Jacobites and their utter humiliation when the cowardly Charles sneaked away dressed as a woman having been betrayed by Jacobites and Scots alike. The truth is not as romantic as the myth. As we know to our cost people will lie. steal and invent all manner of stories to cover their misdemeanours and create an abridged version of history avoiding the unpleasant truth.

This glass is really not a “disguised” Jacobite. There is no cipher. no code nothing to be interpreted. It was a quite blatant display of support for anyone when knew the history of the landing.
