It is possible to weave a Jacobite interpretation onto this engraving. It is not as tenuous as some we have seen in recent months ( Prince of Wales feathers in isolation. the most well known christogram of all IHS. and oak trees in isolation with an entirely fabricated fact that the young pretender hid in an oak to escape capture after Culloden. itself a windswept moor).
The sunflower is frequently used in association with Jacobitism. The flower is a symbol of loyalty. the flower always follows the sun. the true source of light. the sun kings. Solitary mining bees emerge from ground and can be interpreted as a returning soul having pupated beneath the ground having consumed the flesh of the dead in accordance with period belief.
The intention of the engraver may well have been Jacobite inspired. however. Van Gogh painted many a canvass with sunflowers and bees in his absinthe fuelled haze and yet we have no doubt that his inspiration was simply decorative. This engraving may be simply decorative.
