Manufactured in a generally consistent style over a period of four decades. The earliest examples date from the reign of George III. These were subsequently known as hock glasses. after Queen Victoria’s preferred tipple. Beware of 20th century reproductions with spiral-moulded pontil scars. It is also worth noting that the term “Bristol green” although in common use is entirely misleading. Cobalt from Germany was shipped through the port of Bristol and this was used locally to produce blue glass. Green glass requires the addition of iron oxide or  for this intense colour chomium that was imported from Russia via the port of London.
