A Set of Four Regency Marsala or Port Glasses c1820
These glasses are known as Marsala or Port glasses in the literature. Marsala is another fortified wine from Sicily. it was introduced to Britain in the 1770s by an enterprising John Woodhouse who having tasted the wines in Sicily realised that they were similar in nature to Port and Sherry and as they were fortified they would travel well.
They have bucket bowls above a plain stem with a blade knop and cushion. Conical feet. snapped pontils. They stand 4 1/4 inches high with 2 1/4 bowls and 2 1/4 feet. Lead glas no chips or cracks or restoration
