When it comes to Ghosts Goblins and Ghouls Halloween or to give its proper title 'All Hallows Eve' is just another day for those of us raised in the shadow of Pendle Hill in that part of North East Lancashire that lies close to the historic border that was the West Riding of Yorkshire as well as the Ribble valley and the neighbouring Forest of Bowland.
In 1612 this area became the talk of the nation when about twenty locals were rounded up and incarcerated in Lancaster Castle on a charge of witchcraft and for consorting with the devil.
The better known were Old mother Demdike, Old Chattox and Alice Nutter whilst all but one perished either from jail fever or being executed having been found guilty and hung.
In recent years Alice Nutter, the relatively well to do wife of a yeoman farmer, has returned to be near her former home of Roughlee Hall in the guise of a life size metal figure that stands on the kerbside.
Having driven past her several times this year it was gratifying to notice that she is regularly adorned with bouquets of flowers placed in her arms by those that know better in these more enlightened times
