Matthew Boulton was quite simply one of the greatest silversmiths and businessmen of his time. Instrumental in the foundation of both the Birmingham and Sheffield assay offices, Boulton primarily worked with silver plate, and sterling silver examples are extremely rare. Boulton died in 1809 and his son, also named Matthew, took over the business which ran into the mid 19th century.
