Features and Provenance: Aulus Albinus was born about 151BC. belonging to the high ranking Roman family of Postumia. They were traditionally magistrates and Aulus continued in the family business. He spent time in the army under his brother Spurius. but in 109BC he was left to his own devices and led a disastrous attack against Numidia. His forces were ambushed and eventually only allowed to leave if they performed the task of ‘passing under the yoke’ – a humiliating act of bowing low under a yoke of spears – Rome bowed to no one. News of this humiliation reached Rome and all magistrates where questioned about their conduct – Spurius was admonished for leaving his brother in charge and it seems Aulus himself got away very lightly. However. his military blunders were to continue. when. in 89BC. he instigated the seige of Pompeii harbour; this was so unpopular that the troops stoned him to death.
