Features and Provenance: Born in 1515 to Catherine de’ Medici and Henri II of France. little Henri did not expect to have to rule being fourth in line to the throne. Almost by way of dividing up the royal roles. he was made king of Poland when his father died. However. when his brother died without issue. he abandoned Poland for France. The ‘Wars of Religion’ marred his reign with violent factions such as: the Catholic League. the Huguenots and the Malcontents. tearing the country apart. A staunch Protestant himself. he was murdered by Jacques Clement. a Catholic fanatic. in 1589. His successor converted to Catholicism to try to keep the peace!
