Features and Provenance: The Roman emperors often paid tribute to their ancestors by way of placing them on their coinage, either as conjoined heads or as lone busts. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was one of these revered friends and ancestors and compared to many high ranking officials of the time, appears to have been an all round 'goodie'. He was born around 64BC and died about AD 12 at the age of 50. As Emperor Augustus's friend and right-hand man he appeared on coins with him. He excelled as a commander on land and at sea, and as Augustus was childless, he was also a good contender for the throne on Augustus's death. Sadly, he pre-deceased Augustus, so was never emperor. Many of his descendants were to hold high office and our coin was issued under Caligula, to honour his Grandfather.

His legacies abound, for example, after the victory at the battle of Actium, he built the original Pantheon, but this was destroyed in AD 80; however, Hadrian later had it re-built copying his plans and even devoted the temple to him. Another of his achievements was to quantify the Roman foot (based on his own, equivalent to 11.64 inches or 29.6cm), a pace being 5 feet and a mile was 5,000ft! He even oversaw the development and advancement of the Roman sewage and water systems!
