Reverse: Head of cereal (wheat) with leaf to left. club above and AMI (faint [for magistrate]) below leaf. META upwards to right

Features and Provenance: Metapontion, where this Greek silver stater was minted, was an ancient Greek colony on the south coast of Italy. In its heyday it was extremely prosperous; its fertile soils helped to produced bountiful harvests. so much so that it depicted wheat on its coins. It is recorded that Metaponians sent a ‘golden harvest’ to the temple at Delphi and this may have actually been a sheaf of wheat made of gold.
Leukippos was the legendary founder of the city.
