Features and Provenance: Antoninus was adopted by Hadrian and thereby made his heir when his health failed him in 138AD. An unusual stipulation to this arrangement was that Antoninus himself should adopt two named heirs before this could happen. Antoninus agreed and dutifully adopted Marcus Aurelius (17 at the time) and Lucius Verus (aged 8). Antoninus went on to reign for a further 23 successful years.
Pax is Latin for Peace and adopted this deity from the Greek god Eirene. She is thought to have been the daughter of Jupiter and Justice and is often depicted holding an olive-branch and cornucopia (horn of plenty). as in our coin. but also a caduceus or sceptre. She is also associated with Spring.
