Features and Provenance: Nerva was emperor from 96 to 98 AD. He came to the throne at the age of 66 after spending most of his life in service to Nero and the Imperial Court. but his reign was marred by his inability to assert his authority over the army. Having no children. the Praetorian Guard insisted that he adopt a successor and he chose Trajan. The Senate declared ‘damnatio memoriae’ after his predecessor. Domitian. died and they re-worked all of his statues to look like Nerva! Ironically. the hands clasped depicted on the reverse of the coin were supposed to symbolise unity between Nerva and the Roman army.
