Features and Provenance:
A slightly different version of this coin was also produced with the wording ARAB ADQ under the ground line. This translates to Arabia was ‘acquired’ rather than conquered; Trajan using diplomatic means rather than force on this occasion after the death of the ruler Rabel II Soter. The Nabataean kingdom was renamed Arabia Pretaea. Why this lettering should have been removed from this version can only be speculated. but may have indicated weakness at a time when Rome’s strength was paramount.
