Features and Provenance: Tiberius Claudius Nero was a Roman moneyer during the Republican period, hoard coins point to a date of around 78 to 80 BC. He should not be confused with the emperors with the same names although it is certain that he was the grandfather of Emperor Tiberius. We know little about him other than he held high posts under Pompey during the Spanish wars. The first thing you notice about the coin is that is what is known as serrated, the reason for this is uncertain, but does allow fakes to be spotted. As one of the three magistrates to be selected as a moneyer each year, he was in the perfect position to take advantage of the position by self promotion. As moneyer, he was allowed to design the coins himself. Our coin has a reverse that echoes those before it but the obverse depicts the goddess Diana which was pure propaganda, implying that the gods were on their side and victory was assured. He copied a design from an earlier coin from 81BC so he wasn't very original, but what he was say was that Rome was the centre of the world and their destiny was for ever upward - little did they know.
