At the age of fourteen. fearing for his life. Henry left his Welsh home for Burgundy. France. By the age of 26 his claim to the throne was dwindling but he was still the senior Lancastrian male and gathered troops to claim his right by force. He met Richard III at Bosworth Field in Leicestershire. England on 22 August 1485. During the battle Richard was killed. effectively ending the ‘War of the Roses’. Henry declared himself king by ‘right of conquest’ and shrewdly recorded this from the day before the battle. thereby making anybody who fought against him guilty of treason. This allowed him to confiscate Richard’s lands and restore his own. He was crowned in October. He died at the age of 52.
