An actual siege piece of this grade attain £2000 and weigh 14g. our example is a fraction of this and only 5.61g. During the English civil wars. three royalist fortresses minted their own coinage out of any silver they could obtain. mostly silver plates and cups. On some examples you can still see the original patterns engraved on these items. These were lozenge shaped tokens to differ from the actual coinage of the day and were minted as half-crowns. shillings. ninepence and sixpences. Charles and his troops were besieged in Newark Castle by the forces of Oliver Cromwell and the OBS on the ‘coin.’ an abbreviation for Obsidian translates from the Latin to ‘under siege.’
