Features and Provenance: George was born to the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1865 to the then king. Edward VII. He was third in line to the throne. but after the death of his father and then his beloved brother. Albert Victor. he became king of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India in 1910. He had a happy childhood and was brought up in a naval tradition; a love of all things nautical continued in his free time. gaining him the epithet ‘the sailor king’. He was king during World War I and often visited the front and hospitals with his wife. Mary of Teck. It was during this time. that he willingly changed the family name to Windsor. a popular move by all accounts.
