Features and Provenance: Henry III’s reign started with pennies of the short cross type. but as their quality deteriorated. a new coinage was ordered from 1247. Up until this time. it was common for pennies to be cut in half by the mint to act as halfpence and even quarter pence; although this was useful to give lower denominations. being so small. they probably got lost easily. So called ‘clipping’ was also rife. where the edges of the coins were shaved off to collect the silver. The ‘long cross’ coinage was introduced to make things simpler. and with the added security measure that the cross now reached the rim. hopefully deter clipping – of course it didn’t. Around this time small numbers of halfpennies and farthings were also produced on a round flan.
