Features and Provenance: James came to the throne in 1685 and only reigned for three years after which he was deposed during the ‘Glorious Revolution’ in 1688.
The small denominations were also used as Maundy money which was first given as arms for the poor in lieu of food and clothing and was given by the monarch’s official; the recipient then got this every year for life. Later. it was suggested that the monarch themselves gave out these coins. Nowadays. the coinage is given for good works in the community and recipients are chosen every year. The denominations are in 4. 3. 2 and 1 penny pieces and are given to the value of the monarch’s age in pennies.
