Features and Provenance: Pope Clement XIII was born Carlo della Tore Rezzonico in 1693. he was ordained in 1731 and rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church until his Papacy in 1758 when he became head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States. He died in 1769 at the age of 75. During his papacy he tried to build bridges with the protestant church in England and the Low Countries and also recognised the legitimacy of the Hannoverian Kings of England and refused to recognise Charles Edward Stuart as Charles III.
He also chose to blaspheme on his death bed. “Oh God. Oh God what pain”
