Features and Provenance: When the guinea was replaced by the sovereign of twenty shillings in 1817. it was natural for the 2 guinea coin to be replaced by the £2 or double sovereign. but this didn’t happen until Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year. 1887. to celebrate 50 years on the throne. Sovereigns and double sovereigns were often worn as jewellery and so became quite worn. but the gold content is quite sufficient to make these a good investment with a real historical benefit.
