Period: Gran Colombia as Republic under President Simon Bolivar

Date: 1826

Origin: Bogota mint

Obverse: Draped head of Liberty. left. legend REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA

Reverse: Fasces (bundle of rods) with crossed bow and arrows flanked by cornucopias. legend 1.P.J.F. BOGOTA

Size and Weight: 14mm. 1.67g

Features and Provenance: This almost insignificant little coin oozes history from a period of great change to South America. At the time this coin was milled. the President was Simon Bolivar famous for dissolving the then Gran Colombia. which encompassed most of South America. into successor states of Colombia. Ecuador. Venezuela and Panama. The image on the reverse of the coin is now the state emblem on the flag; the fasces being an a symbol of authority originally depicted in Ancient Rome and later used by Fascist Italy.    

 

 

Condition Summary. This varies with the age of coin and there are grades between

Uncirculated (U). As struck with no traces of wear

Extremely Fine (EF). Very slight traces of wear. all parts of legend etc present. visible and clear

Very Fine (VF). Some signs of wear on the higher parts of the relief. all parts of legend etc present. but maybe worn

Fine (F). Wear on the coin and parts of legend etc may be missing or not visible
