Features and Provenance: The two escudo was nicknamed the doubloon as it was worth $4 dollars (double). the basic escudo being worth $2. As confusing as this is. the 8 escudo coin has also been called a doubloon or even double doubloon! It has had its links with classic piracy prior to the period of this coin; ships transported the coins from mints in the Americas and from Spain to the colonies where they were captured or wrecked. The ‘pieces of eight’ (the silver counterpart) and the doubloon are not just the stuff of legends
