Date : 5th to 9th Century A.D
Period : Byzantine or East Roman Empire
Origin : Eastern Mediterranean. possibly Syria or Palestine
Colour : Dark blue
Body : Ribbed
Glass Type : ‘Soda-lime’

Condition : No chips or cracks. heavily encrusted.

The encrustation can be cleaned away but we were advised against doing this by the owner. Collectors of ancient glass prefer both iridescence and encrustation as marks of authenticity. Early Byzantine glass mirrored Roman glass. Byzantine glass blowers within Turkey. Syria and Palestine developed their own styles as the eastern Roman empire. or Byzantium if you prefer continued long after the demise of founding Rome.
