Such glass cups are always optimistically dated. The most widely adopted method of dating was devised by a Dutch Lady called Clasina Isings. and is known as the “Isings” method. This uses archaeological evidence to date glass finds. The earliest date from when such items were located within a dated dig is the1st century AD Italy. There was very little advance in technology or in the styles of glass produced in the East Roman Empire / Byzantium until the advent of Islam and the 6th century although production did fall away in the 5th century when the East Roma Empire disintegrated into fragmented warring state.

A number of similar exampes are held by the Corning museum
