Eric Knowles Comments

This is the first example that I have held that is completely intact in over 40 years.

Bernardo Perroto was an Altare glassmaker who relocated to Orleans France

In 1671 he successfully petitioned the Duc d’Orleans for a monopoly in glassmaking. This meant that he was the only glassmaker allowed to operate on the banks of the Loire and that same year he purchased a retail outlet in Orleans.

Bernard Perrot was recognised as a ‘gentilhomme verrier’ or gentleman glassmaker and died childless in 1709. Members of the wider family continued in the glassmaking trade for about the next fifty years.

This particular bottle would have been for perfume. holy oil or possibly snuff. The Fleur de Lys is the symbol of the House of Bourbon who ruled France from 1589 to 1848 with the exception the period inbetween the French Revolution of 1789 and Napoleons first downfall in 1814 and his second after his ‘100 day reign in 1815 ended at Waterloo.

There is an almost identical example held within the collection of the V and A
