Additional Information : This Filigrana glass dates from c1700. Erwin Baumgartner who wrote the standard text about the filigrana glass in the museum of Paris observed that glasses of this form are to be found mostly within Swiss museums one example being held at the Musée Ariana Genève. Furthermore shards were discovered in Berne and one other location within Switzerland. They have also ben located in Friuli in Northern Italy. If damaged during manufacture the components containing enamel threads within the glass could not be used as cullett as it contained the opaque enamel and would discolour the recycled batch. hence the surviving shards. Thus he attributed this form to Switzerland or possibly Bavaria ( despite there apparently being no archaelogicial evidence for the latter) on the basis that Swiss glass makers moved into Bavaria during the late 17th and early 18th century.
This is in the facon Venise and is of a good early construction with a clear glass merese acting as the glue bit. Filigrana is the name for glass made from bundles of colourles and coloured enamel canes. This example would be correctly described as vetro fili ( or file / or filis). literally glass with threads We have included links to two articles written by Lameris on filigrana . This is worth reading as it does go into superb detail about production methods and this gives good dating evidence for collectors.
