Description
Heading : Tunbridge ware jewellery box with boy with hawk image
Date : c1855
Period : Victoria
Origin : Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Decoration : Central mosaic of a boy with a halk and spaniel. This is often described as being Prince Edward ( later Edward VII). This, however, seems a spurious claim. The image comes from a berlin woolwork pattern, examples of which we have on display at the Pantiles Arcade. There is a foliate border within dentil stringing to the cover. Side panels decorated with floral banding. Interior lined with embroided silk. Lift out tray with velvet lining, base with white paper. “Love letter” document compartment.
Size : 13.8 x 19cm and 10cm height
Condition : Excellent, minor wear with age externally. Interior once had dividers which are now absent.
Restoration : Relined lift out tray.
Weight : 1045 grams
As this design is lifted from a Berlin woolwork pattern many of the manufacturers of the time made this mosaic and consequently positive attribution is challenging
