Features and Provenance: This rare Ancient Greek coin is ex Roma Numismatics. previously a German dealer.
In ancient times. Aspendos was inland but was still an important place of trade. with a port and naval base. It was under Persian rule for most of its history. When Alexander the Great arrived the population resisted with gusto. If they fought naked. like the warrior on the obverse of the coin. it must have been an intimidating sight. but they were finally subdued in 333BC.
