By our reckoning this depicts Mr Badger showing Ratty and Moley up to their quarters when they, waylaid by both weather and menacing winter Wild Wood dwellers, call upon him in the middle of the night. The kindly but gruff Badger puts them up for the night as they discuss the many vehicular transgressions of the great Mr Toad,  the embodiment of the Edwardian idle rich and the son of Mr Badger’s deceased friend.

‘Well, it’s time. we were all in bed,’ said the Badger, getting up and fetching flat candlesticks. ‘Come along, you two, and I’ll show you to your quarters. And take your time tomorrow morning – breakfast at any hour you please!’
