Mrs Samuel Roberts (born Martha Susan Blakeney) was married to Sir Samuel Roberts, 1st Baronet. A distinguished career in business (Chairman of Cammell Laird and the National Provincial Bank) was followed by a distinguished political career – holding both the office of mayor and representing High Peak as a member of parliament for 20 years. Robert Hadfield was also a 1st Baronet following an innovative metalurgical career which saw him discover manganese steel (an early steel alloy) and inventing silicone steel which had widespread industrial uses.
Victorians at their best: industrious, innovative, and public service focussed.
