Antique Sterling Silver For Dining and Silver Tableware
Sterling silver salvers or silver serving trays known to some as a silver mirrored tray due to the mirror like finish are both functional and decorative trays in their own right. Large serving trays were essential for 18th century dining. The same may be said for silver cruet sets with multiple dispensing bottles for condiments and sauces or antique silver egg cruets used for breakfast with a silver toast rack for the essential soldiers.
Silver salt and pepper sets, salt and pepper shakers if you prefer are a reduction of the 18th century cruet set, however some of the novelty examples and those designed by Christofle and Christopher Dresser are highly collectable.
Silver sugar casters were never made to accompany teasets, they were used to sweeten food at the dining table. Nutmeg was so valuable in the 18th century that gentlemen would carry their own nutmeg grater. Dry mustard pots held Tewkesbury mustard balls to be broken apart and added to cider, vinegar, oil or beer at the dining table again dispensed from oil and vinegar sets.
This brief summary of silver dinnerware cannot exclude silver flatware, silver knives, forks and antique silver spoons and silver soup ladles. If you are looking for silver coffee spoons or a silver muffineer remember that all silver items or tableware must be used daily or from time to time to be appreciated.
