Mauchline wares have much in common with Tunbridge wares. Both started as painted or penwork on sycamore and became progressively more elaborate and used to decorate a diverse range of everyday items to be sold to tourists. With Tunbridge Wells the regency period saw rapid growth in production. In Scotland the growth can be attributed to the arrival or Prince Albert as Scotland reminded him his native Saxe-Coburg / Bavaria and the arrival of the railway in Inverness.
