Zwischengold is a partcularly notable Germanic glassmaking technique involving casing decoration between two glasses. The interior glass is gilded externally. In this case it has also been engraved and schwartzlot decoration applied to the cuts within the veins of the leaves and feathers of the birds. The interior decorated tumbler is then affixed and cased within the external tumbler.
Franz Joseph was the uncle of the famous Archduke Franz Ferdinand (his heir) whose assasination was the flashpoint that started the First World War.
