Charles Edward Stuart was so desperate was he to regain the crown that he even changed his faith. His final chance came in 1759 during the seven years war when the French were planning an invasion. Charles was so singularly unimpressive that the hope that an may be raised under the Jacobite cause was dismissed by the French as idle fancy.
The Pretender died in 1788 and one hundred years later his passing was commemorated. This may well be a commemorative item.
