The quart has been a de facto legal measure of beer in the licensed trade since 1824 and it remains so to this day. The only issue is that very few pubs have quart glasses. Many still have yard glasses that are a standard length but the 2 1/2 pint capacity has never been standardised to this day. Interestingly the yard glass evolved in glassmaking houses as a means of refreshing the glassblowers during the reign of James II
