Diamond Point Engraved Victorian Rummer c1860

Heading : A very fine diamond point engraved rummer
Period : Victoria - c1860*

Colour : Clear
Bowl : Incurved bucket. Diamond point engraved with a coursing scene. A gentleman wearing a melon domed hat with two slight hounds on the leash are in pusuit of a hare. Set amidst a landscape with domed hills, an ash tree grasses and birds in flight
Stem : Capstan with annular knop and cushion. The collar and join between stem and bowl is typical of glasses made in the mid 19th century
Foot : Low conical
Pontil : Snapped
Glass Type : Lead
Size :  Height 13.3cms, bowl 9.8cms diameter, foot 9.8cms
Condition : Good. Some inclusions in the foot
Restoration : The underside of the foot has been polished and no artificial wear has been applied.
Weight: 378g

* The same form of glass was manufactured from as early as 1830 for at least 40 years. Some have radial moulded bases in the bowl c1830-40, others have a terraced collar 1840-60.  Dating evidence can also be provided by the engraving itself. In this case the hat being worn by the sportsman is of a type that was popular around 1860 ( many thanks to Mrs T Richards)
