Description
An oddity from the high Victorian dining table. After dinner spirits would be selected by the gentleman assembled and individual spirit decanters brought to the table with your choice of “poison”. This has a hallmarked silver top with finial and a silver neck ring. The cork has obviously degraded and been replaced. The cap has long screw threaded pin that pierces the cork and is then secured by a small silver nut. It is hallmarked sterling silver for London 1899 and was made by William Hutton and sons who were registered silversmiths in London from 1895. they specialised in “arts and crafts” and this desire for natural simplicity is reflected in the top.
The bottle is “Bristol blue” and it has a sand pontil mark. It stands 5 1/2 inches to the top of the finial.
