Description
Pair Victorian Blue Decanters c1850
A superb pair of Victorian pillar-bell decanters c1850 which have their original ground hollow rib moulded stoppers. Wide pouring rims above rib moulded bodies with applied rings on the neck. Sand pontils on the base. Decanters had been mould blown. dip moulded in two and three piece moulds for decades before these were made. but the techniques were already 2000 years old.
The rib moulded stopper and sand pontil is right for the period. Neck rings had fallen out of fashion by 1850 in favour of more elegant slice cut or moulded necks on shaft and globe shaped decanters. They have no chips cracks or restoration and are clean and clear. Wear to the base as expected. They measure 13 ¾ inches tall which includes the stoppers and each holds over 2 bottles of wine. Unknown origin. soda glass . they may have been made in Manchester. Newcatle. Birmingham…..very much an English form.
Impressive examples and a great colour .
