Pilgrims flasks were known as “ampullae” by the Romans and were used to carry water or oil. Some were decorated with images of deities and saints. They are supposed to resemble gourds used by early pilgrims. The term “pilgrims flask” is still used today for these moon shaped flast sided flasks. This is essentialy a pocket or hip flask. simply add a libation of your choice and a cork. mines a malt!
