This pre-dates the Weights and Measures Act of 1878 and the Richardson patent of 1875. A sixth of a gill was the standard measure in England. one fifth of a gill in Scotland and in Ireland the standard was a quarter gill. Amazingly the standard “home measure” in England three eighths of gill in England and Ireland. and a quarter gill in Scotland read into that whatever you wish.
To avoid oversized home measures and get more “glasses” per bottle this this will be ideal. Excellent stocking filler !
